Earth Day History

The first Earth Day was back to 1970, when growing concern for the vast consumption of fossil fuels inspired the movement. Environmental issues in the US had started to become common knowledge and the movement had rare cross party and class support. Enlisting followers from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, urban dwellers and farmers. By the end of 1970, the first Earth Day helped with the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency – which in turn was responsible for some of the environmental protection laws which still stand the US today.

By 1990 Earth Day had grown into a global movement mobilising 200 million people from across the world. This huge movement helped to highlight the importance of recycling efforts worldwide.

Earth Day beyond the Millennium has continued to grow year on year. Gaining support from some of the most highly renowned figures, at the forefront of the international environmental issues.

Earth Day Today

Today, Earth Day is marked by more than a billion people every year as a day of action to change human behaviour and create global, national and local policy changes.
